About this calculator
Paint coverage on the tin assumes a sealed, primed surface. Fresh plaster drinks the first coat, so the first coat on new work always uses more than the label suggests.
What it assumes
- Coverage figures assume a primed, sealed surface — new plaster needs a primer coat first.
- Dark colours over light ones often need a third coat.

On new plaster or gypsum, yes — a sealer or primer coat stops the topcoat soaking in unevenly. On a sound previously painted wall, two topcoats are usually enough.
